Springhouse Cellar began in a tiny stone building on the Rowena crest above the Columbia River and is now housed in a century-old building that was originally home to a pear cannery and distillery in beautiful downtown Hood River. The building is constructed with massive beams, wide wood floors and a long comfortable bar. In the 1950’s, a fire all but destroyed the east side of the building - leaving what we now affectionally call ‘the Ruins’. Thankfully nobody ever got around to tearing down those walls.
Today we hand-craft small lots of premium wines with fruit from select Columbia Gorge vineyards. We believe wine belongs on the table, so our mission downstairs (in the winery) is to produce complex, food-friendly wines that reflect the jaw-dropping beauty of the Gorge. The goal upstairs (in the tasting room) is to help you discover how our wines will flourish in your kitchen and on your table as you gather with family and friends.
Wine tasting at Springhouse is a fun experience with knowledgeable staff, in a relaxed but sophisticated environment. Whether you have a well established cellar or are just learning about wine, we would love to see you. Join us any day of the week, noon to 6pm (closed Mondays November thru March).
Locals and visitors also associate Springhouse with our music series, Ruins Tuesday, held in the outdoor ‘Ruins’. This delightful partnership with local food vendors and regional musicians has become a summer tradition. See our Events page for details.
The music series doesn’t end with summer, but rolls indoors for Back Room Tuesday thru mid-November, resuming again in March. Locals are invited to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, great music, Springhouse wines, local beers and a local food vendor. See our Events page for details.
Fine wine with great entertainment and local events - a winning combination for
In the Fall of 2015, winemaker Peter Cushman joined the Springhouse team. Cushman took over the cellar in August and jumped into his first crush for Springhouse, and the earliest harvest the Gorge has ever seen. Look for some fantastic wines to come out of this vintage.
Peter was born and raised in the heart of the Willamette Valley wine country. After earning a degree in biology and chemistry at the University of Oregon in 2009, he decided to follow in his grandfather’s and father’s footsteps to become a third generation winemaker. Cushman moved to Hood River to assist his father at Viento, the family winery situated in the promising Columbia Gorge wine region.
Cushman focuses on locally grown grapes and a natural approach to winemaking. He utilizes methods learned while studying and working in New Zealand, and has expanded his expertise while making wine for Wy’East Vineyards and Mt. Hood Winery, along with Viento. In the last 6 years, Cushman has received worthy recognition from critics, including gold medals and 90+ point –rated wines.
Peter and his wife Sarah live in the Hood River valley with their daughter Marcela, near their newly planted Pinot Noir vineyard.
